The School

Over the course of evolution, Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB has been standing tall and attaining remarkable achievements for almost a century, aided by the capitalisation of the leading-edge technology. It was 87 years ago when our dedicated pioneers first sow the seeds of Chinese education on the land of Brunei and Chung Hwa Middle School, indebted to the wise leadership of His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei in providing a supportive milieu, has sprouted, grown and emerged as a iconic institution that promotes the rich heritage of Tiong Hwa community and preaches the much-treasured Tiong Hwa virtues from generations to generations.

Chung Hwa Middle School was bestowed with beaming pride during the gracious visit of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah who consented to officiate the 80th Anniversary. Now, with the surging needs to keep pace with the latest educational reforms, the school vows to implement the avant-garde SPN 21 curriculum through the optimum utilisation of state-of-the-art facilities and up-to-date software. One noted example is the completion of Pehin Temenggong DatoLim Teck Hoo building in year 2008, considered to embody the school's determination in moulding the future pillars of the society with the best resources available.

Although Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB has the undeterred aim to ensure a perpetual enthusiasm in Mandarin and Tiong Hwa values amongst Tiong Hwa community and other races in Brunei, it never forgets its duty to place equal emphasis on cultivating moral value, knowledge, physical strength, appreciation of arts and team spirit into the students. For decades, Chung Hwa Middle School has been serving as the backbone of the society in producing well-rounded citizens who are trilingual and possess both academic & athletic competence.

In this era of vigorous technological advancement, Chung Hwa Middles School, BSB has always been gearing up to create innovative ways of integrating information and communication technology (ICT) into the curriculum and management. In retrospect, the management had been computerised and computer class for secondary students was pioneered at the school as early as the eighties. It was soon followed by the establishment of the school computer room in the nineties and the introduction of computer lessons from primary one in 1998.

Over the years, in response to the directives from the Ministry of Education, the school's ICT facilities have been substantially upgraded. Having begun the setting up of Chung Hwa Network in the library in 2002 and proudly emerging as the first school in Brunei to be linked by intranet, Chung Hwa presently has one of the most extensive educational websites in the country which incorporate all three languages, catering for parents and other educationists of different races.

School History

To provide quality education to Tiong Hwa community in Brunei, Kapitan China Ong Boon Pang and few dignitaries, after much effort, established a school called York Choi School in 1918. The school had a humble start where it only rented a two-story shop lot as its classroom without a building of its own.

In 1922, the school was named Chung Hwa School and only 16 years later in 1938, the school made a major breakthrough with its own premises situated at Jalan Bendahara (approximately the vacant space of the current Parliament)

In 1940, Kapitan China Ong Boon Pang passed away peaceful after chairing the school board for 22 years and his great contribution in laying a solid foundation for the school is still remember and much appreciated.

In 1954, Lim Teck Hoo was elected as the new School Board.

In 1955, the school commenced its secondary level and changed its name to Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB.

In 1957, the government of Brunei subsidised the school and paid for the teachers' salary, administration cost and the construction cost of the basic school facilities. Moreover, free lunch, and later changed into free beverage, was provided to fellow students from 1959 to 1969.

In 1959, a comprehensive learning curriculum was successfully implemented at the school with its upper secondary level introduced in 1959. The total student population surged, surpassing the 1000 benchmark.

In 1962, one two-storey building was completed with the financing from both government and donation from the community. In 1962, the school launched its kindergarten level.

In 1968, a stadium was in completion.

In 1970, the government withdrawing its financial support to the school fomented financial constraints in the Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB. The crisis was solved after the Tiong Hwa Community volunteered to support the school in a form of monthly donation and the kind benefaction provided by the philanthropic Kapitan China Awang Lim Teck Hoo and other board members.

Carrington

          Born 26th November 2008, he was over 6 day from actual EDD which is 20th November 2008. On that day mom got appointment at nearest government clinic, they told her everything is okay but mom still feel uneasy. So, the nurse told her to get a check-up at Likas Specialist Hospital just to make sure. Mom sent by dad which accompany by all of us, dad want to accompany mom to get inside hospital but mom ask him to parked the car and took care of us first. So, mom get to the second floor by herself...even the security guard worried to see her walk alone with big bump. After arrived and register, they ask mom to take urine sample...while at ladies room mom saw lil bit of blood and sure the time is nearly. She inform the nurse in front desk and they brought her to get check by doctor. Mom admit to ward and place to her bed and by that time it's already 12 noon. Mom did get to eat some food but she can't barely finish the second spoon as her body is shaking like she's in cold but she didn't even felt cold. Dad came and she asked dad to call for a nurse to check her. Several nurses came, mom explain to them about her condition. The nurse said maybe mom was hungry or feel cold but mom said no and explain that she might be delivering soon as she felt lie it before while delivering Carigan. So, the nurse quickly put mom in a stretcher and sent her to the delivery room, that time was around 1pm. 45 minutes later mom gave a birth to adorable lil boy weight 3.5kg and breast feeding him as soon as they clean him. Mom only getting back to her bed around 5pm. All the pregnant mom in waiting congratulate mom and tell her that how great she is to giving birth early as some of them had stay at the hospital for many days. Mom stay for a night and went home with new born the next day. The new baby nickname as Papaw and get his name after a week later...at first mom already got a name before he was born which is Caridean Aurelius but dad didn't like the first name. At last they name him Carrington Aurelius, his second name is a lil bit different from his other sibling because mom would like to put a name similar like his bio-father to honor him, which is Autok. Right now, Papaw (like we all use to call him) is growing, a bit funny, cute and we totally adore him. He such a sweety!

Carigan

          Carigan was born on 12th January 2003, 11.11am at Puan Medinah Hospital. He was weight around 3.3kg. His skin a lil bit darker that his other sibling. So, mom thought Carigan has inherit her skintone but day by day his skintone became lighter and just like his other sibling. After he was born, our grand mother (dad's mom) came visit and took 2 live chicken as a 'sogit'. Carigan is the first grandson from his dad family, as non of his other brother has a son by that time. Carigan nickname is Owen, which given by his eldest sister. Before naming as Carigan, mom was actually plan to name his Carlyle but dad didn't approved the first name and they re-search for other name which is Carigan Eleazar. Carigan has a strong hand and head, before he reach 2 years old he broke his wooden bed and often got mom's mouth bleed as if he's angry or want something he will knock his head to others face. He's a hyperactive kids, hard to control but now as he grown up...he turn better than before. But still giving us a headache and heart attack especially to mom. The special things about Carigan is he's friendly, forgiving and never start a fight at school. The most unforgettable and worst things ever happen to him is he was push while playing at school and his elbow bones crack and gotten a surgery to attach his bone back together.

Carmen

          7th December 2001, mom went to Wisma Merdeka with her sister for a last minute shopping on baby items. While inside the shopping complex, mom felt uneasy and her water broke. She tell her sister to get a taxi and ask the taxi driver to sent them home, at first the taxi driver want to send her to hospital but she refuse as she need to get her and the baby things at home. Mom ask her sister to get to the house to take her things and her grandmother, the headed to the hospital after that. Mom arrive around 3pm and check by a doctor in no time. Then they sent mom to delivery room, her Aunt Lizuis who was working there at the time even came to the delivery room to check her. Mom didn't want her aunt to leave but her break time is over, so instead she ask for her friend to accompany mom...5 minutes later exactly 8.45pm, mom gave a birth to Carmen Electra which weight 3.25kg. She was cute, white and little like a baby bird but her hand and foot were turn green-purplish as a result of late delivery. Her hair is so black and thick than her other sibling. She got her first step when she was 10 month old. She's small in size but very loud and talkative.

Carerra

          She is the first offspring of the family, born on 23rd December 2000 early two days from her actual EDD around 11.57am at Puan Medinah Hospital. She weight around 3.3kg. She was delivery via vacuum extension. Mom was actually admitted around 1am after her water broke around 12 midnight. She thought she'll be delivering soon but instead she has to bear nearly 12 hour pain before giving birth to her. Mom lost so many blood and nearly faint during the delivery, even the doctor suggest for cesarean but apparently the baby heads was out a lil bit but mom can't push any harder as she's out of energy due to prolong pain and sleepless. After the doctor vacuum her head, she was out to see the world. That time mom's was very happy that her baby is safe but can see her clearly as mom's vision became dark and nearly faint. She look exactly like her father especial her head, no wonder she was stuck in there and need to be vacuum to help her out. But one things for sure her eyes a bright and like a moon, she amaze them all because she's just been born a few hours and already open her eyes and it's big. Carerra was name by her dad and her second name Eleanor represent mom's dad. She a very nice baby, hardly cry or making noise...she cries when she's hungry, wet and not feeling well. Now she's grown up, she able to take care her other sibling and help with the house chores.
